When certain job markets demand a high supply of labor, but there is a shortage of enough qualified individuals to take them up, employers will offer the few available higher salary tags in a bid to attract and retain them. Those who possess the necessary knowledge, skills and experience, stand to receive a higher salary offer (Krugman, 2007). Another factor determining salary is the geographic location of the employees’ posting. For example, an organization may be having branches in various states, and a new employee is to be posted to a state different than the one the interview occurred. Such an employee will receive a higher salary to compensate his moving away from his home state (Krugman, 2007). Furthermore, geographically different regions have different living costs; thus different regions will offer different salaries for the same job and experience (Krugman, 2007). There are some states whose minimum wages exceed the federal minimum rate, and in those states, the employer pays whichever is higher. Employers also base their salary rates on what their competitors are paying. After running searches and getting an idea of what the competition pay, most employers will offer higher salaries in order to outbid them in acquiring the best skilled employees available. In cases where the government is the employer, government guidelines determine salaries. For example, the price of the bid or tender placed on the project for which the employee, or subcontractor, is being hired will play a part in determining their pay. The elderly man Essay My response to situation number four is not to charge the elderly man. First and foremost, a prosecutor’s duty entails determining what cases should be prosecuted. In effect, this means, acting as a â€Å"strainer. † This means that decisions are based on several factors such as â€Å"limited resources, difficulty in enforcement, and not to mention political and public pressures† In deciding against prosecution, the following factors were taken into consideration: age, public interest, and rehabilitation from imprisonment. From the nature of the case and the age of the accused, there would be little reason to imprison him. In addition, looking at the factual circumstances surrounding the commission of the crime, there is little reason to do so. The fact that he immediately turned himself in shows his understanding of right and wrong, in the same breath making a choice to commit such wrong to free his wife from her disease. Moreover, I took media attention in consideration. Being published on the front page of a newspaper indicates a high public in the case, which is the very basis for enacting laws. The article will elicit two kinds of reaction from the public. The first reaction is negative in that people would disagree to the act of ending his wife’s life, but the other reaction could be an outpouring of sympathy for an elderly man who only wanted his wife’s suffering to end. To quote the assigned text, â€Å"in some situations, prosecutors do not charge because of an outpouring of public sympathy or support for the accused, perhaps because of the type of crime or identity of the victim. † Furthermore, based on a study that looks at the prosecutor as â€Å"operating in an exchange system†, whether between the prosecutor and police officers or the courts, in which case considerations may include jail overcrowding and docket backlog, a prosecutor would think twice whether or not charges should be pressed. On the basis of the above reasons, taxpayers’ money would be better spent prosecuting individuals whose malicious or negligent actions have caused pain and suffering to the victims and their families.

Dracula Literary Analysis Essay Although the idea of vampires had already been popular in folklore long before Bram Stoker wrote Dracula, his adaptation of the tale lead to the creation of one of literatures most Symbolically sexualized characters. Dracula have proven the 1897 novel to be truly timeless. It is arguably one of the most beloved classics of gothic Literature. However, relying loosely on the text, modern renditions habitually bypass the more Controversial subjects of fear within the text as those fears relate to female sexuality and Homosexuality. By examining the Victorian era in which Dracula was written, looking closely At how the female characters are portrayed, the gender relations between the characters, and the Blatant homosexual undertones of the novel, this reflection will explore how the classic seamlessly manipulates the themes of womens sexuality, gender inversion, and also the point of view of Bram Stoker. Dracula becomes the famous horror novel in the 15th century and also an inspired man y horror story after that. First person point of view is the predominate viewpoint of Dracula. The fascinating thing about the book is that it takes on the viewpoint of several characters in the form of letters, journals, and diary entries. Occasionally there are third person accounts written as newspaper articles. If the story were only written in third person or even in only one characters viewpoint the story would not unfold in quite the same way. The reader would not know more than the characters or be able to put things together long before the characters. It would not be nearly as suspenseful. Mina Murray Harker is the main character in the novel because we read her diary entries more than anyone elses. Mina is brave because she goes into dangerous situations trying to save her friend Lucy. Mina is persistent in that she refuses to give up hope that they will destroy Dracula. She is hard working as shown when she types up all the diaries and journals from several people so that all the information about Dracula is found in one place. Finally, Mina is also loyal to her husband and she is intelligent. Professor Van Helsing is one of the many minor characters in the novel. Van Helsing is an intelligent man, having studied unusual cases from all around the world. He is also a bit strange when he demands that the suffering Lucy wear garlic around her neck. Van Helsing is a loyal friend when he travels to London to help discover what is wrong with Lucy. Finally he is resourceful and determined. Dracula is written in journal entries, letters between friends, and news articles. Not only is it written in many forms, it uses many points of view. The journal entries, and letters are written in first person, but the news articles are written in third person. Because of these many points of view, the reader gets to see how many people view the situation with the Count and the sub-plots in the novel. The novel starts in first person point of view with Jonathon Harker. He seems to be a very pract ical man that pays attention to detail. Then the point of view shifts to letters between Mina Harker and Lucy Westenra. These two sweet girls have been best friends for years and who face disaster when Lucy begins to walk in her sleep. In between these letters a News article is told in a narrators voice. From there the point of view shifts to Dr. Seward. His journal entries are more centered on facts and possible solutions. Along with Dr. Sewards entries, Professor Van Helsing does include his own thoughts on the problems and the solutions he views. This many shifts in point of view normally wouldnt work, and cause the story to seem disjointed. Since the shifts are journal or diary entries, Stoker uses transitions well and makes the shifts not abrupt and work for the plot. One of the major themes in Dracula is the concept of Christian Salvation. This theme starts in the beginning as Harker is traveling to Castle Dracula. The locals cross themselves, make the sign of the cross, and one puts a Rosary around Jonathon Harkers neck. We see Stoker using the theme that if a person will follow Christ salvation will be found in heaven and evil will be kept at bay. Another instance were Stoker is using the theme of Christian Salvation is when Van Helsing is brought into so save Lucy Westenra from the vampire hold. After the Count arrives at London he begins his affair with Lucy, but not in the usual sense. The Count chooses beautiful women, then seduces and converts her while she sleeps. As Mina and Dr. Seward strive to keep Lucy alive, Professor Van Helsing arrives to aid Seward in saving Lucy. After realizing that Lucy is a vampire, a cross is kept around at all times Even though Lucy did become a vampire, it was through Christian Salvation that Van Helsing tr ied to save her. Throughout the novel Bram Stoker deals with the theme of beast versus humanity. The idea of same-sex erotica also confuses what it means to be a sexual being. The novel does not dismiss homoerotic desire and threat; rather it simply continues to diffuse and displace it (Craft 111). As seen in the combination of male blood during the transfusion scene, men may only touch each other through women; therefore Dracula uses the hyper-sexuality of the mutated women he controls in order to get to the men he really wants. He is the original supreme vampire and uses his offshoots of female vampires to enact his will and desire. My jackals [will] do my bidding when I want to feed, he claims (Stoker 360). For this reason, among others, numerous scholars have read the processes of biting, sucking, and sharing blood in Dracula as sexual, reproductive actions. Throughout the Dracula book I am now more clearly understand the culture and lifestyle of the 15th century. However, more important than the meaning behind the tangible concluding events, is the fact that within Dracula are the ever-present struggles to define, maintain, manipulate, and explore what it means to be a sexual being; to struggle with duality. Stoker stretches the concept until it becomes as distorted as his master villain, yet in the process, brings the reader closer to discovering the true spectrum of human sexuality.

Here are five examples of such mistakes by professional writers, with discussions and corrections: 1. â€Å"The idea that an economically struggling country of 24 million could submit a technically superior country that occupies 3.79 million square miles is preposterous.† This sentence offers two usage errors for the price of one. First, the party that does the submitting is the loser, not the victor; the writer perhaps confused submit with subdue. Second, technically means â€Å"in a technical manner†; the larger country is technologically superior. Here’s the revision: â€Å"The idea that an economically struggling country of 24 million could subdue a technologically superior country that occupies 3.79 million square miles is preposterous.† 2. â€Å"But if you’re awaiting the demise of local housing prices, you may be waiting a long time.† The reader is presumably not waiting for local housing prices to die, but that’s what this sentence says. The writer should have used decline in place of demise (â€Å"But if you’re awaiting the decline of local housing prices, you may be waiting a long time†) or should revise the sentence: â€Å"But if you’re waiting for local housing prices to decrease, you may be waiting a long time.† 3. â€Å"The recovered bodies were kept in rows on the premise of a nearby school.† Premise is almost correct, but the word means â€Å"a proposition or presupposition,† or â€Å"an explanation.† The writer should have used the plural form of the word, which, in addition to referring to more than one of the preceding items, denotes a building or part of a building and, often, the land on which it is located. (This sense derives from the fact that the real estate’s characteristics are explained in the premises of a deed.) The sentence should read, â€Å"The recovered bodies were kept in rows on the premises of a nearby school.† 4. â€Å"He was considered a shoe-in for the position.† This sentence includes a homophonic error in which the erroneous term shoe-in is, with some justification, confused for shoo-in, because writers might believe that the image of wedging one’s shoe between a doorway and a door to ensure entry is reasonably analogous to having an advantage. But the sentence should read, â€Å"He was considered a shoo-in for the position.† 5. â€Å"Eastwood’s conversation with an empty chair on stage begs the question: Will his latest film also be playing to empty seats when it debuts later this month?† The primary error here is the common misuse of the phrase â€Å"beg(s) the question,† which refers to a fallacious argument in which an assumption being argued is used to prove itself (as in, for example, â€Å"It’s very cold because it’s below freezing†), when the writer means simply â€Å"invites the question.† But this slight revision preserves syntax typical in valid begging-the-question arguments.
